Novotného Lávka is a complex of buildings that were originally Old Town Mills or Bridge Mills (as it is located close to the Charles Bridge), called also Old Town Footbridge (according to the "bridge" that made them accessible). The complex was renamed in 1885 as Novotny Footbridge (Novotného Lávka) after miller Novotný, who financed the bridge. The footbridge was necessary as the buildings of original mills stand on stilts (water is still running under the houses).
In 1969 were the Old Town Mills handed over to to an organization that was the predecessor of the Association, which has historical roots in the mid-nineteenth century.
The Association today brings together 67 independent professional societies in scientific and technical fields; these are members of the Association as well as autonomous legal bodies.
